Recent in Representation

If you have yet to hear about the HBO Max series, Euphoria, let us formerly introduce you to one of its leading supernovas. Though, she most certainly needs no introduction from us, Hunter Schafer is taking the world by storm and she is doing it from both in front of and behind the the scenes of a show that has captured the minds of millions. In this exclusive post, we are diving deep into our exploration of one of the more recent stars to fall from the sky and land into the media spotlight. Hunter Schafer is an actress, model, and LGBTQ+ rights activist who identifies as transgender. Her breakout role in Euphoria has earned her critical acclaim for her portrayal of Jules Vaughn, a high school student navigating the ups and downs that come with growing up and figuring out life. While the series is full of hidden gems and is layered with themes ranging from sexuality to identity, Euphoria does a brilliant job of representation. More specifically, LGBTQ+ representation.

While it is no secret that most media sources generally lack representation, it is the depiction of those that identify as transgender that seem to get even less screen time and fall almost completely off of the map. That is where Hunter Schafer comes in. Her recent involvement in the media scene and on the show is not to be taken lightly. With a limited amount of streaming services offering representation of the transgender community, HBO Max seems to be moving things along in the right direction. In the past, media attempts to have transgendered roles are either rare or bare minimum, but Euphoria offers a storyline that is not only centered around a transgendered person, but has an actual person who identifies as a trans woman playing the role. With an amassed cult following, Hunter Schafer being a part of the show is not only important, but highly influential.

In addition to other forms of representation that the HBO Max show has to offer its audience, LGBTQ+ relationships are just as recognized. With a diverse cast and compelling storyline, the chemistry between the main characters, Rue and Jules, are not only romantic, but complicated with a twist. Everything right down to the color choices and make-up designs in Euphoria echoes a consciousness that is unparalleled amongst other sources of media. While it should also be acknowledged that the demand for more representation across the board is being met with slow progression, it is progression nonetheless. However, it can not go unnoticed that media exploring romance or love interests involving the transgender community definitely still has a long way to go. But, the fact that Euphoria is aware of its overall production is promising to other sources of media that will hopefully catch on and be influenced to follow its example of representation.

Hunter Schafer's involvement in Euphoria is highly significant to the way that LGBTQ+ representation is continuing to be made in the media. From Laverne Cox to Hari Nef, artists like Hunter Schafer are continuing to hold the door open to other members of the LGBTQ+ community and are paving the way to more inclusivity and recognition in the media sphere itself. After filming the first season of Euphoria, she has already written and produced a special episode of the show as a follow-up and is proving that representation does not have to stop at just the main role (there are many roles for representation to be a part of). This "Euphoria Effect" is not hard to come by. One watch of the show offers something special and spellbinding that changes the way we see not only others, but ourselves. Sam Levinson's Drama series is a sure way to find representation and is inspiring other members of the LGBTQ+ community to be more comfortable with themselves, and just as significantly, have role models like Hunter Schafer to look up to. And for those that also identify as transgender, they need not to look very far to find themselves being represented with the colorful magic and diverse storyline that Euphoria has to offer. There is no doubt in my mind that Hunter Schafer is a star that is only going to keep shining across our screens and will, inevitably, continue to pave the way for LGBTQ+ representation.

Visionary Voices: Tashnuva Anan Shishir is Changing the Way that LGBTQ+ Representation is Portrayed in the World of News and Media

Tashnuva Anan Shishir (Photo Credit: Thedailystar.net ) Shishir's Story The news just got a whole lot more inclusive. Allow us to introduce you to Tashnuva Anan Shishir, Bangladesh's first transgender news anchor. If you remember from earlier this month, one of our post's featured U.S. Representative, Ritchie Torres. Shortly after that, Shishir's spotlight expanded across the globe. Not only did this allow the her to share a part of her truth, but it also gave her the opportunity to feel more recognized.  The door quickly opened to a conversation about LGBTQ+ representation, a conversation that mainly takes place in low volume or is completely muted. It is interesting to consider that women who share Shishir's story are still trying to become recognized within our society. And with recognition, it is just as important to have representation. Without it, representation for the LGBTQ+ community are facing much of an uphill battle. Yet, the climb continues.  Tashnuva...

Visionary Voices: Frank Ocean is a Legend, Influencing LGBTQ+ Music with Sound and Representation in the Media

Frank Ocean (Photo Credit: Gq.com ) Frankly, He is a Legend Get ready for yet another post dedicated to a representational singing sensation. We have a strong feeling that you absolutely, positively have heard his star name before. Chances are, you have also heard his music one, two, or even thousands of times on the radio or even had someone recommend his talents to you. That is how famous this young and visionary artist is. And he only seems to continue to take us all to the next level with him. His name is Frank Ocean. This dedication post certainly feels like a long time coming and I say this because Frank Ocean is someone I consider myself to be immensely inspired by. I will never forget the first time that I heard Ocean's "Swim Good" and "Novacane" and certainly all thanks to a former friend of mine who was able to introduce me to some of his music (no, not the same friend that usually introduces me to good music and movies, although they are a pretty ...
